McLean is centrally located in the Dranesville District of Fairfax County and ranks # 1 for financial management in the United States. The Technology Corridor houses some of the world's top telecommunications and software companies. Huge employers like the CIA, Big 6 Consulting, Gannett Company Incorporated, home of Gannett/USA Today, Capital One Financial, CSC, Freddie Mac, and the West Group increase McLean's highly educated and highly skilled workforce over the last decade. At the doorstep of the world's largest research supporter and technology buyer, the U.S. government, and two major airports, Dulles International and Reagan National Airports, it's no wonder economic forecasters predict even more opportunities well into the century for McLean.
The McLean Planning Committee serves at the pleasure of the Fairfax County Dranesville Distict Supervisor to help guide new construction and outside remodeling to conform to the guidelines set in the Comprehensive Plan and adhere to the Revitalization effort in the Central Business District. The McLean Revitalization Corporation (MRC) promotes and facilitates the revitalization of the McLean Community Business Center (CBC). Revitalization involves joint efforts by residents, landowners, businesses, and civic organizations to enhance the the CBC’s appearance, make if a more pedestrian friendly center of activity, and increase its economic vitality.The board is made up of representatives from the McLean Citizens Association, surrounding citizens associations, the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce and the McLean Commercial Landowners Association. Liasions from the Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax County HCD also participate in MRC planning, as do Advisory Board members.
Current Revitalization Projects include:
- The Streetscape Improvement Pilot Project includes brick pavers, updated lighting, and landscaping.
- Undergrounding Utilities – Work has begun to move utility lines underground.
- Pedestrian Safety– MRC has arranged for the purchase and installation of several benches and bus shelters.
To encourage revitalization, the Chamber helps businesses in the McLean Community Business Center District (CBD) improve their storefronts, beautify its streets, and improves area safety. The Chamber also bestows the McLean Beautification Award on a local business that has made outstanding improvements.
